Essential Moving Tips
Careful planning is essential for a smooth move. From moving within the same suburb to across town, these handy planning tips will create a more organised move. Start planning your move as soon as possible. The best way to plan is to work backwards from you moving date into set timeframes. Everyone has different timeframes from months in advance to only days, however the earlier you know the moving day, the more prepared you can be. We are working off a 6 week settlement period. Adjust the time frames accordingly to your own situation.
6 weeks to go
You have got an approximate date for your move. So what needs to be thought of at this stage?
- Contact Smoothmoves and invite us to come around for an in-person estimation. We will meet you and listen to your requirements, look at the goods, look at the access and provide an accurate estimation of costs.
- It may be good idea to establish a file with all the details relating to your upcoming move. The file can include:
- The estimation and moving information documents from Smoothmoves
- An inventory of your possessions (if going into storage, which Smoothmoves can organise for you)
- A floor plan of your house indicating what in each room needs to be packed
- A floor plan of your new house to determine where your possessions will go
- Start thinking about which items are going to your new home – and which items may need to go into storage or be disposed of. Starting the floor plan process above will assist you with this.
- A garage sale or Ebay might help to dispose of any unwanted items
- Giving items away to charities may be an option as well. Most charities can collect if you ring and book time
- Don’t forget practical matters like ensuring your furniture will fit through doorways at your new address (Smoothmoves can help you with this process)
- Any transfer arrangements between schools and daycare could be made now
- It is a good time to do some final research on the new community you’re moving to
- You will want to know where all the local amenities are before you arrive and possibly require them in a short space of time
- Be mindful of the insurance required to cover the move – check with Smoothmoves the insurance options or check with your own insurance company what your premium covers for moving house to ensure that everything is covered
