Careful planning is essential for a smooth move. From moving within the same suburb to across town, these handy planning tips will create a more organised move. Start planning your move as soon as possible. The best way to plan is to work backwards from you moving date into set timeframes. Everyone has different timeframes from months in advance to only days, however the earlier you know the moving day, the more prepared you can be. We are working off a 6 week settlement period. Adjust the time frames accordingly to your own situation.

4 weeks to go

 

You have now moved into the 1 month to go marker and things may seem a little bit more real to you.

 

There is no need to move into a panic as there’s still plenty of time to get the essential things done. Some of the more specific tasks concerning your move must be completed for a smooth move. What should you consider at the 4 weeks to go?

  • Would you like SmoothMoves to pack your goods?  If not all, then perhaps just the kitchen and breakables?

  • If you are doing your own packing it is good to get started now with non essentials such as books and storage cupboard contents


  • At this point, you will probably be finalising arrangements concerning your new address re settlement or lease matters.

  • Now is a good time to double check anything you might have overlooked in planning your move. Good places to look at include:
- the garden
- the garage
- the shed
- under the house
- the attic

  • Start thinking about redirecting mail, newspapers and any publication subscriptions you receive.  Australia Post has some good information to help you with other details regarding your move. 

  • These important agencies need to know about your change of address.  These organisations will likely include:

- Australian Taxation Office
- Government agencies such as Centrelink
- Your local road traffic authority
- Phone company – remember to inform them of the date you will be moving out and when you require to be reconnected at your

new address.
- Electricity/gas suppliers – as with telephone, it’s best to inform your electricity and/or gas suppliers with plenty of notice.
- Internet Service Provider (ISP)– they will need time to reconnect you. Let them know early enough and it can all be arranged.
- Foxtel/Austar
- Insurance companies, banks and building societies
- Superannuation provider(s).
- Electoral office
- Libraries – it’s good to tell your library you’re moving out of their area and to register for one near your new address.
- Other interested parties – does your: lawyer, accountant, doctor, dentist, employers know that you’re moving?
- Other organisations such as charities, clubs, & rewards cards

  • During this time, eliminate all the junk from your property – the best policy is to be ruthless; if in doubt, throw out

  • Ensure all the food in your freezer is steadily reducing

  • If you’re renting, determine the date for the final inspection of your property and the date that bond money will be returned to you
