Essential Packing Tips

If you choose to do the packing yourself, it is important to get the basics right. If you pack your goods the correct way, it will mean a more stress-free move for you and the smooth operators.

Essential Box Packing

Use Smoothmoves proper removal cartons.  They are double ply, packing the box will be easier, your items will be safer and the removal technicians will be able to stack the boxes in the truck with ease – saving you time and money

Avoid soft bags, plastic bags and garbage bags for moving goods – they can burst and spill, they are hard to stack and will take up more space in the truck because of the awkward shape

Always use acid-free butchers paper.  This will keep your precious items safe and clean (newspaper will stain your goods)

Good quality packing tape is essential. It will keep the boxes together! Bad quality tape can become unstuck in the move and can cause and an accident

Turn the flat packed box upside down and fold in the smaller flaps first followed by the two larger flaps

Use good quality tape and cross the tape along the bottom

If storing the boxes for a period of time, apply tape along the sides of boxes so to eliminate any gaps in the box

Plan what you are putting in each box

Small cartons are for heavy & fragile items:

  • Books
  • CD’s
  • Crockery
  • Glassware
  • Fragile china & crystal

Large cartons are for lighter & bulkier items:

  • Linen
  • Cushions
  • Equipment
  • Kitchen pots & pans
  • Pictures

Anything too big to fit into a Large carton, leave for Smoothmoves technicians to wrap and protect on moving day

Carefully wrap fragile goods in 2 – 3 sheets of butcher paper.  Mark small items will an ‘X’ so they do not get lost in the box

Place a good layer of screwed-up butchers paper across the bottom of the box

Place heavier items on the bottom of box

Place another layer of crushed butchers paper and place next lot of goods

Make sure they fit snugly together so there will be no movement

Continue layering the items wrapped in butcher paper between layers of crushed butcher paper, working up from the heavier items at the bottom, to the lighter, finer items on the top

Plates should be separated by butchers paper and wrapped in bundles of 4-6 plates each. Bundles should be placed upright on their edge. Likewise wrapped glasses and cups should be packed upright

Finish flush to the top of the box with a final layer of crushed buchers paper. All items should fit tightly to ensure there is no movement.  Cartons should not rattle, bend inwards or buckle outwards

Close and tape the box along the gap.  If storing, remember to tape the sides so there are no gaps.

Label each of the cartons as you complete filling them with room type and contents.  This will make the job for the removal technicians much easier when unloading the truck at your new residence & much easier for you when unpacking your contents. Eg.  ‘Master Bedroom – bedside table contents Sally’ or ‘Study – books 3rd shelf’.  Try not to mix items from different rooms in the same carton, unless they are destined to be together.

Writing on the tape at the top, rather than on the box itself will lengthen the useful life of the carton by promoting recycling.

Do not fill boxes too full – there are health and safety issues involved. Remember that items such as books are notoriously heavy.

Do not fill Large boxes with heavy items – the Smooth Operators need to be able to lift boxes comfortably

Self packed items are not covered by Smoothmoves insurance so you must take out additional insurance yourself or goods are carried at your own risk

Begin your packing with out-of-season or infrequently-used items – save your most frequently used items such as kitchen utensils and essentials to last

Remove light bulbs from lamps

Keep parts of items together – for example, curtain rod hangers and mirror screws. The smaller items can be placed in bags and taped to the back of the larger item for ease of assembly at the other end

If you have managed to keep the original packaging from any electronic equipment, this is ideal.  Otherwise use butcher paper or bubble wrap

Don’t forget to code the wires to stereos, computers, home entertainment systems etc. – it will make re-assembly at the other end much easier

Leave larger items and equipment for Smoothmoves.  This includes large pictures on walls, stereos, televisions, PC’s, fridge, washing machine etc.

Place any items not being moved in a specific area in your property – ensure our technicians are aware of this.

For hanging wardrobe clothes, use Smoothmoves Porta-robes (see Packing Materials)

Items that should not be packed include: Money, jewellery, valuable papers, etc – keep them with you on moving day.
